Booze and cinema

This weekend we revisited one of our favorite mellow drinking pastimes. That is, drinking while watching a movie.

Perfect for bad weather night, or one where you just want to stay in — the key to making it a success is choosing the right kind of film. Comedies seem to work best, and actioners and horror flicks can also be entertaining. Bypass serious dramas at all costs. For example, seek out something with Bill Murray or Arnold Schwarzenegger, and avoid, say, Lawrence Olivier. But don’t limit yourself to films that the critics have called “good.”

As the drinks flow, a running commentary adds to the enjoyment. Making fun of a bad film can be just as fun as watching a good one. And if your creative like we (sometimes) are, go ahead and make up a customized drinking game while your at it.

From The Other Side

We here at Chesco drinks sometimes get a look at the drunkards of the county from the other side of the bar — one of us behind this operation picks up bartending shifts. For 8 long hours on a Friday or Saturday night, beers are poured, caps popped, shots poured and cocktails mixed. You people, and normally us, get sloshed.

The money isn’t bad, but one thing that has been learned is we belong on the receiving end of the bar and when drunk we all tend to be annoying — even those of us that have worked in the business and should know better.

And remember, “someone that is nice to you but not nice to the bartender/server is not a nice person. “

Springy

The transition from lion to lamb seems to be happening and it’s very pleasant — at least we here at chescodrinks.com think so. Drinking outside is nice after being couped up inside sipping on bottles of wine all winter (though we think there is nothing wrong with that). But getting 40s and going to the park is always nice.

On another note, Jitters seems to have become a weekly spot — a great jukebox, random conversations and good bartenders make a bar great — two weeks ago someone had a breathalyzer thingy that got passed around. The thingy is flawed. So cheers to Jitters to helping us pass some time and helping us feel like @#$% (insert any four-letter word you’d like, we’re keeping the drinking blog family friendly) the next morning.

Light Beers …

The problem is that they are too damn light and we can drink too damn many of them. So unless you’re watching you’re figure, what’s the point? And if you’re watching your figure, go for a run … to the bar and don’t order a light beer. In fact, order a shot too.

Sam’s Pizza Island

Good old Sam’s. Cheap booze, decent food and mostly terrible service. If you want to see Mexican knife fights in West Chester, this is a good place to start.
But boy is the service spotty. You may remember “George” who used to work there. Or perhaps you remember the old “scan IDs into the computer system” they used to have.

We are a frequent customer there, usually late at night to replenish our refrigerator with six-pack or two. But apparently the several hundred times we have bought beer there isn’t good enough, because last week they wouldn’t serve us. Is there anything worse than getting negged when you’re over 21?

Not one to give up easily though — we then walked an extra block to the Beer Mill and bought a whole case. Problem solved.

Rex’s

Ah, a West Chester staple.  God knows how many bands have passed through the doors.  Off hand we can think of Elliot Smith, Cat Power, Agents of Good Roots, Transient, Cheers Elephant (point is the mix is local and international). There’s a pool table, cheep booze and the smell of too many cigarettes over the years. A great rock n’ roll bar indeed. How many nights were lost in that place? How many fights? How much, how many aren’t a rock n’ roll questions. But sadly, the place is closing. Yes we know you know and everyone else knows. But it’s a damn shame.

Chescodrinks Tackles Global Warming

We here at Chescodrinks believe the only thing better than drinking out and about  in Chester County is when you can stay home, drink and grill — especially in February.

Last week brought an unusually warm night and it was perfect for grilling.  Global Warming say what?  What.  Damn right, but how do you not take advantage.  And we weren’t alone.

Hot sausage, peppers and onions were on the menu, with of course, the only beer you can order by saying Lager.  Wasn’t that an ad campaign.  Probably, but what hasn’t been.

The verdict is in: Grilling anytime is awesome.

Boozing In The Afternoon

We decided that there’s nothing wrong with Saturday afternoon drinking.  We mean, my god, God created weekends and if you can’t drink away a day before you go skiing, what else can you do?

We’re not creating a world in 7 days.  Are you?  Why not enjoy those days off with some drinks before heading out to find cheap drinks?

So to that we say bottoms up on the weekends … a good bottle of wine, hot toddies (warmed whiskey), beers or anything else that keeps you warm and happy while passing  time in the winter.

The Square Bar

We were hanging out at the Square Bar a few days ago and the prices were right and the atmosphere even better.  It felt like it was West Chester before the chains arrived.  But a question we couldn’t answer was … why is it called the Square Bar?  It sure as hell isn’t square.
